Park Street to Reopen Wednesday Afternoon as Paving Continues

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- Technical issues involved in the paving process has forced the closure of a section of Park Street to extend to Wednesday.

Binghamton City officials say a tack coat had already been placed on the roadway Tuesday, when a hydraulic line break occurred on the paver, resulting in the street remaining closed overnight.

Paving is to be completed on Wednesday morning, with the closure affecting Park Street between Grand Boulevard and Main Street. Officials say the street is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday afternoon.

NY Resident Among Five Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan Attack

(WASHINGTON) -- A New York resident has been identified among five soldiers killed in an attack in Afghanistan over the weekend.

The Department of Defense says 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Francis G. Phillips IV, of Meridian, N.Y., died on Saturday from injuries sustained when the vehicle he was in, was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device.

Also killed in the attack were 1st Lt. Brandon J. Landrum, 26, of Lawton, Okla.; Spc. Kevin Cardoza, 19, of Mercedes, Texas; Spc. Thomas P. Murach, 22, of Meridian, Idaho; and Spc. Brandon J. Prescott, 24, of Bend, Ore.

All five soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Section of Park Street to Close Tuesday for Paving

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- The City of Binghamton is advising residents that part of Park Street will be closed on Tuesday for road paving work to be carried out.

The City has announced that Park Street, from Main Street to Schubert Street, will be affected by the paving work. Residents are asked to remove their vehicles from the street by 6 a.m.

City officials say, weather permitting, once the work is completed, the street will remain closed for about four hours.

New City Website Launched

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- Binghamton now boasts a new website.

Mayor Matt Ryan says the website, which was launched on Thursday, will help to make the city's resources more accessible to residents, businesses and visitors.

"The new website additionally offers increased transparency through a comprehensive list of reports, as well as a variety of online service items, such as online payment options and forms that allow citizens to fill out permit applications online," Ryan said in a statement.

Fire Destroys Endicott Building

(ENDICOTT, N.Y.) -- Fire destroyed a building in Endicott on Wednesday.

The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at the structure located on Airport Road. Published reports stated that crews from West Corners, West Endicott and Campville responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes.

There were no reports of injury and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

City Announces Binghamton Philharmonic Concert Series

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- Music lovers in Binghamton are in for a treat over the next few months, as the City and the Binghamton Philharmonic announced a monthly outdoor ensemble concert series that's scheduled to begin this month.

The concert series kicks off on Sunday with a performance by the Brass Ensemble at Rec Park, coinciding with the Greater Binghamton Bridge Run.

The monthly concert series runs through October 4, when the Percussion Ensemble is scheduled to perform at the MetroCenter.

"Much like the Pops on the River concerts of past years, this series aims to make Binghamton that much more of a destination for residents and visitors alike," Mayor Matt Ryan said in a statement. "The City is very proud to play a role in hosting this series, and we encourage citizens to come out and enjoy it."

Deadline Extended for Business Plan Competition Applications

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- The deadline to apply for the fifth annual BLDC-EAP Business Plan Competition has been extended by a few days.

The deadline to submit the qualification applicaiton for the competition was originally May 1, but officials have announced that the deadline is now May 6.

A top prize of $5,000 is being offered for the best plan for developing a business in Binghamton. The competition, funded by the Binghamton Local Development Corporation and the Broome Triad Entrepreneurial Assistance Program, was announced Monday.

New Toddler Jungle Gym to Be Unveiled at Walnut Street Park

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- A newly-installed toddler jungle gym at Walnut Street Park will be unveiled on Tuesday.

The ribbon cutting and unveiling of the toddler jungle gym will be put on by Binghamton University's PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholars.

In a release, the group said that it partnered with another group, Safe Streets, to develop an active play space for children in Walnut Street Park.

Tuesday's ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

One Killed, One Injured in Susquehanna County Crash

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- One person is dead following a vehicular crash in Susquehanna County on Thursday night.

The crash happened around 11 p.m. on Hawleyton Road. Pennsylvania State Police said in published reports that Joseph Keith Rafferty, 49, was driving a pickup truck west along the roadway when he apparently failed to properly negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle. The truck rolled over a number of times, ejecting Rafferty and passenger Kimberly Kelly-Mott, 45.

Rafferty was pronounced dead at the scene, while Kelly-Mott was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition.

Man Pleads Guilty to Vehicular Manslaughter in Deadly Collision

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) -- An Endicott man has pled guilty to a vehicular manslaughter charge stemming from a fatal collision in Binghamton last September.

Kevin Buie, 29, pled guilty on Wednesday to charges of second-degree vehicular manslaughter and second-degree assault, PressConnects.com reported. The charges stem from a collision on Sept. 15, 2012, when Buie was behind the wheel of his car and struck two pedestrians.

Jonathan Pratt, 35, was struck and killed, while the other pedestrian Joseph Dirig, 35, was seriously injured.
