Multi-State Coalition Calls for State Campaign Finance Laws to be Upheld
(WASHINGTON) -- Led by New York's Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, a coalition of 22 states has filed a brief requesting that the Supreme Court uphold state campaign finance laws.
The call comes following a decision in a recent case where the court has been asked to strike down Montana's campaign finance law on the basis that it violates the First Amendment rights of corporations.
However, in opposition to this ruling, the coalition argues that states have an interest in regulating corporate spending in state and local elections, according to a release from Schneiderman's office, which went on to say that the court shouldn't automatically invalidate state campaign finance laws without a full hearing.
In addition to New York, the coalition comprises of Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, along with the District of Columbia.
