New York Lawmakers Propose Ban on Anonymous Online Comments

(ALBANY, N.Y.) -- Lawmakers in New York state are proposing to ban anonymous comments online, The Guardian reports.

Two identical bills in the senate and assembly would require website administrators to delete anonymous posts on New York-based websites. Commenters would be given a 48-hour window to identify posts before they are taken down.

Assemblyman Jim Conte, co-sponsor of the bill, says the bill is intended to curb online bullying, but opponents say the proposal is a first-amendment violation.
