(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) -- A 32-year-old man has been charged by police after his one-year-old child was found wandering alone at a Birmingham gas station on Tuesday.
Cornelius Steward is charged with child endangerment and disorderly conduct, stemming from the incident.
Police were called to the gas station by someone who spotted the child wandering, with responding officers then spending approximately an hour searching for the toddler's parents, but to no avail. Officials say eventually Steward arrived on the scene, and said he was the child's father.
The child and a sibling have since been put in the custody of the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
