Woman Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison in $2M Tax Fraud Scheme
(MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala) -- A woman from Montgomery County has been sentenced to 5 years and 4 months in prison for her role in a scheme where fraudulent tax returns were filed seeking over $2 million in tax refunds.
Crystal Sayles was sentenced on Wednesday, after after pleading guilty in May to charges of filing false claims, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft. In addition to doing prison time, Sayles was also ordered to pay over $1 million in restitution.
According to court documents, between January 2010 and July 2011, Sayles and others participated in a scheme where over 480 fraudulent tax returns were filed using stolen identities.
