Chick-Fil-A Anti-Gay Boycott: 'Muppets' Company Severs Ties

When Chick-Fil-A president Dan Cathy came out against same-sex marriage in an interview last week, he was either lauded by groups and businesses that supported his stance, or criticized and boycotted by those which disagreed. On Monday, The Jim Henson Company added its name to those opposing the chicken chain’s hierarchy.

"The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors," the company wrote on its Facebook page. "Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage," and, the restaurant chain added, it will be donating its final residual check to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Speaking last week about his franchise’s “support of the traditional family,” Dan Cathy, son of company founder S. Truett Cathy, said, “guilty as charged” when it comes to accusations that his company is actively opposed to gay marriage.

“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit,” he said. “We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that … we know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”

The gay rights campaign NOH8, which is supported by Glee actress Jane Lynch, Deepak Chopra, Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and the Kardashian sisters, among others, has also called for a Chick-Fil-A boycott.
