Claims for Unemployment Benefits Increase by 27,000

Spencer Platt/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Snapping four consecutive weeks of drops, claims for unemployment benefits went up in the first full week of April, according to the Labor Department's latest report released Thursday.

For the week ending April 9, the department said claims jumped by 27,000 to 412,000.  The previous week, claims stood at 385,000.

The four-week average also went up slightly to 395,750, an increase of 5,500 from the previous week's average of 390,250.
