Dow Loses Ground; Nasdaq Advances at Close

Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The markets saw little movement Tuesday as Wall Street heads into the holiday weekend. The week before Labor Day is traditionally one of the lightest of the year for trading volume.

The Dow fell 22 points, closing at 13,103.  The index slipped lower for the sixth time in seven trading sessions, The Wall Street Journal reports. The S&P 500 was off a point at the close of trading.  The Nasdaq managed to add four points to close at 3,077.

A widely watched measure of the housing market finds prices up in many cities.  The latest Standard and Poors/Case Shiller Home Price Index shows average increases of more than six percent in this year's second quarter. That's the biggest jump since 2006 -- before the housing bubble burst.

Meanwhile, private research group says consumer confidence unexpectedly fell in August to the lowest level since November of 2011. The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index fell to 60.6, down from a revised 65.4 in July. Worries about jobs were the main reason why.
