Facebook Reaches One Billion Users

Peter Foley/Bloomberg via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- It's been long awaited and now the big milestone is here: Facebook has reached one billion users.

The world's largest social network made the announcement Thursday morning in a status posting by its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

"This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month," Zuckerberg wrote.  "If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you."

"Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life," the statement continued.  "I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too."

In an attached fact sheet, Facebook says the milestone was actually reached on Sept. 14 at 12:45 p.m. Pacific time.

Since the site launched, the company says its one billion users have contributed to over 1.13 trillion "likes," 219 billion uploaded photos and 17 billion location-tagged posts, including check-ins.
