Flynn's guilty plea, tax reform prospects send Wall Street swinging

JaysonPhotography/iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- A roller coaster day on Wall Street as stocks fell sharply amid news of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's guilty plea to lying for the FBI today, but rebounding as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the GOP had enough votes to pass a tax reform bill.

Early in the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down more than 300 points. It finished the day at 24,231.59 -- down 40.76 for the day.

The Dow had hit a record close on Thursday.

The Nasdaq slid 26.38 to 6,847.59, while the S&P 500 closed the day at 2,642.22, 5.36 lower than it opened.

Crude oil jumped more than one percent, a barrel selling for $58.34 at market's close.
