How to Avoid Online Shopping Scams

Ryan McVay/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- When shopping online, consumers should be wary of who they're buying from, as some sites are run by hackers seeking to steal their personal information.

One tip when choosing a site to shop is not letting the search engine pick one for you.

"You should go to a site you're familiar with such as Amazon.com, Pricegrabber.com," says Cameron Huddleston of Kiplinger.com.

Huddleston adds that shoppers should pick their own seller.

"If someone came and knocked on your door and said 'Hi, I'm selling TVs give me a thousand dollars and expect your package to arrive in a few weeks' you would never do that," he says.

Huddleston also advises consumers to be careful of random searches, which can be targeted by scammers.

"Perhaps you click on an image of the TV you want to buy and suddenly a virus is downloaded onto your computer," he explains.
