JK Rowling Pens Crime Novel Under Another Name

MONA BOSHNAQ/AFP/Getty Images(LONDON) -- It turns out that J.K. Rowling has been practicing the kind of tricks and misdirection usually reserved for her Harry Potter characters.

Rowling has admitted that Robert Galbraith, the first-time author of the detective novel The Cuckoo’s Calling, is actually her writing under a pseudonym.

The Sunday Times of London, which first uncovered the deception, says the novel was published to critical acclaim in April, with one reviewer describing it as “a scintillating debut,” and another praising the “male” author’s skill at describing women’s clothing.

The Cuckoo’s Calling tells the story of a war veteran-turned-private investigator who probes the mysterious death of a model.

After her secret was uncovered, Rowling told the Times, “I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer because Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience.”

Rowling added, “It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation, and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name.”

Within hours of her cover being blown, the book went to number one on Amazon, with a two-week backlog on orders.
