Mixed Jobs Outlook Brings Stocks Down Wednesday

John Foxx | Thinkstock (NEW YORK) -- Doubts about the job market and the pace of the economic recovery had the markets on edge Wednesday.

The Dow closed down 84 points, the Nasdaq fell 13 and the S&P lost nine.

We're getting a mixed picture of the job market from a few new reports.

One from payroll company ADP shows 179,000 new private sector jobs were added in April. That was lower than the 195,000 analysts expected.

Another report, by staffing firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, shows corporate downsizing dropped from March to April.

The weekly numbers come out Thursday, and the monthly unemployment report is due out Friday.
