Modest Changes for US Markets

Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The stock markets sputtered to end the week on reports the economy didn't grow as much as many had hoped.

The Dow Jones Industrials Friday closed up 11.75 points, or 0.08 percent, at 14,712.55. The Nasdaq Composite gave up 10.72 points, a loss of 0.33 percent, to close at 3,279.26. The S&P 500 lost 2.92 points, or 0.18 percent, closing at 1,582.24.

The government says the economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the first three months of the year, missing the 3.1 percent forecast of economists polled by FactSet.

Next week's events could prompt big market moves. The Federal Reserve will hold a policy meeting, and several economic reports are set for release, according to the Wall Street Journal.  European Central Bank officials are expected to meet Thursday, and investors hope to hear more about a potential reduction on interest rates.
