New Jersey Poker Event Cancelled After Fake Gaming Chips Used

Digital Vision/Thinkstock(ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.) -- A poker tournament at Atlantic City's Borgata hotel was cancelled on Saturday after regulators found that one or more participants used counterfeit chips.

On Saturday, the Borgata announced the cancellation of the first event of the Borgata Winter Poker Open, citing only a pending investigation. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement ordered all unpaid prize money be held in trust until a resolution of their investigation.

Lisa Spengler, a spokeswoman for the NJDGE, said on Saturday that other tournament events will continue.

The event was suspended on Friday after suspicions of fake chips arose. The Borgata has thoroughly examined its remaining stock of chips, the New York Daily News reports, and they have been cleared by investigators for other events in the poker tournament.
