(NEW YORK) -- The first few days of the new year can mean rock bottom prices at many of your favorite retailers this weekend. Savvy shoppers can score big discounts on many popular items.
Here’s a look at some of the major markdowns that will be available:
- Belted DKNY puffer winter coat, $129.99, down from $280, at Macy’s.
- Eddie Bauer down jacket, $80, down from $200, at Eddie Bauer.
- Wool peacoat, $30, down from $75, at Old Navy.
- Black riding boots, $35, down from $90, at Kohl’s.
It’s not just all about clothes, however. Best Buy is offering 40 percent discounts on electronics, including the iPhone 5s. It’s typically $199, but can be had for $124.99 with a two-year contract.
Hitha Prabhakar, chief research officer of HP Retail Advisory, says stores are trying to get rid of their old merchandise and bring in new items.
“That means even more discounts on holiday sweaters, holiday merchandise, boots, winter gear and electronic,” she said.
This can be the best time of the year to stock up on Christmas cards, ornaments, wrapping paper and home decor. Target, Walmart and even many grocery and discount stores are offering more than 70 percent off holiday merchandise.
And there’s even something for those who’ve made getting fit a priority for 2014.
“You are in luck if your New Year’s resolution is to work out more,” Prabhakar said. “A lot of that merchandise is discounted up to 50 to 60 percent because people want to go buy treadmills, bar bells, even gym memberships.”
Prabhakar added that people could actually find better deals on fitness items now than they could in the past month or the month before.
