Shutdown Makes for Losing Week on Wall Street

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Stocks made modest advances Friday, but it was not enough to avoid another losing week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 76 points at 15,072.58. The Nasdaq Composite rose 33, closing the day at 3,807.75. The S&P 500 climbed 12 points to end the session at 1,690.50.
The market's trend for the last three weeks has been lower, with the Dow down nearly 3 percent since it hit an all time high on Sept. 18.
Economists and brokers who make their living selling homes say the recent spike in mortgage rates is not likely to derail the housing recovery. Most foresee stable gains over the next year.
