Stay-at-Home Dads Number Two Million in US

Photodisc/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Home is where the heart is and it's where a lot of fathers are as well.

According to a Pew Research Center report, the number of stay-at-home dads has doubled since 1989 from 1.1 million to about two million in 2012.

The number has actually dipped from 2010 when there were an estimated 2.2 million stay-at-home dads, which can be attributed to peaking unemployment rates due to the Great Recession.

As of 2012, 23 percent of men said they were taking care of the children because they couldn't find work while 35 percent admitted they were homebound because of a disability, a sharp drop from 1989 when 56 percent said they were disabled.

Another 22 percent acknowledged either being retired or going to school as their reasons for being home.

So does any father stay at home because they really want to be there to raise the kids? Yes, 21 percent say that's their chief reason for letting mom be the breadwinner.
