Stocks Inch Higher; November Unemployment Report Due Friday

Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The markets didn't see very much movement Thursday.  Investors were cautious as they await the results of the monthly employment report. Still, the indexes managed to close the session slightly higher.
The Dow closed up 39.55 points at 13,074.04. The Nasdaq gained 15.57 points to close at 2,989.27. The S&P 500 added just 4.66 points, and closed at 1,413.94.
The number of people seeking first-time unemployment benefits dropped sharply last week. The Labor Department says a temporary spike caused by superstorm Sandy is over.
The November unemployment numbers -- the first post-election and post-Sandy -- are due out on Friday.
