Stocks Push Further Into Record Territory

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Stocks pushed further into record territory on Monday.

The Dow closed up 18 points at 16,943, while the NASDAQ finished 15 points higher. The S&P 500 was up 2 points, at 1,951.

Tyson Foods won a bidding war for Hillshire Brands, beating an offer by Pilgrim's Pride for the meat-processing company. Tyson raised its offer to $63 a share, beating Pilgrim's Pride's offer of $55 per share.

Merck will spend nearly $4 billion for Idenix, the developer of a hepatitis C drug.

Apple's stock rose nearly 2 percent to over $93 per share, reflecting Apple's 7-for-1 stock split.  Apple closed at $645 dollars per share Friday.
