Oscar Mayer Offering Luxury Bacon Box Set for Father’s Day

Oscar Mayer/ABC News(NEW YORK) -- What's the best way to say happy Father’s Day to your dad? With bacon, of course.

Oscar Mayer is offering a luxury bacon box set as the ultimate expression of love. The gift set consists of raw bacon inside a velvet box along with a choice of a money clip, a pocket knife, or bacon shaped cufflinks.

The set is being advertised with commercials that parody Mother’s Day jewelry commercials, only instead of diamond earrings, the boxes contains delicious bacon.

Despite being somewhat of a joke, luxury bacon box sets are in high demand. They are currently all sold out.

Group Predicts Worldwide Shortage of Bacon Next Year

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Could a bacon shortage be coming in 2013?

That's what the National Pig Association, a British-based industry trade group, predicted on Monday, saying "a world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable."

The NPA says that while herds across Europe are declining because of drought conditions that are affecting this year's corn and soybean crop, the problem will actually spread across the world.

It doesn't seem that such a scenario is likely in the U.S. since pork supplies in warehouses soared to record levels in August, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.  But that might be the calm before the storm since farmers are scaling back their herds because the costs of feeding pigs has gotten more expensive due to the brutally dry summer.

Man Launches Cross-Country Trip Fueled by Trading Bacon

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- An actor has set off from New York with his sights set on Los Angeles, but he's not carrying any cash or plastic -- he's lugging only bacon.

As part of a savvy promotional campaign for Oscar Meyer's thick cut bacon, Josh Sankey has a trailer full of the pork product, and is looking to trade its crispy goodness for everything from cab rides to room and board to toiletries.

Using the handle and hashtag #baconbarter on Twitter, Sankey is tracking his trip and taking offers from interested parties. One such example: an off-campus house at Purdue University, which tweeted, "if you're driving through IN and want to visit Purdue, we have couch space and 29 girls obsessed with bacon!"

Those interested can track Sankey's progress at the website baconbarter.com.

Bacon Fans, Rejoice: Calif. Chain Now Serving 100% Bacon Burger

Slater’s 50/50(LOS ANGELES) -- Slater’s 50/50, a California chain made famous for its half-bacon, half-beef burger, has gone bacon-crazy. The ‘Merica, the restaurant’s July burger of the month, is a 100 percent ground bacon burger topped with more bacon, a sunny-side-up egg, bacon island dressing and bacon cheddar cheese.

“The concept for Slater’s 50/50 Burgers by Design came out of a dare at a Charger’s tailgate party between owner Scott Slater and some of his San Diego State University buddies. Could a 100 percent ground bacon burger work? After some tweaking and perfecting (and a few small grease fires), the answer was yes,” a release from the restaurant said.

The response to the burger on Facebook has been overwhelming, with fans commenting, “The gods have answered our prayers!” and “Must have one soon!!!”

The burger costs $10.95 and is available until the end of July.  Slater’s 50/50 has three locations in Southern California.

Not sure what to order with your bacon burger?  The restaurant also serves a bacon Bloody Mary made with bacon-infused vodka, bacon salt and garnished with a slab of bacon.  For dessert, a warm chocolate and chopped bacon brownie can complete the meal.

Burger King Releases New Bacon Sundae

PR News Photo/Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Bacon used to be known as the deliciously greasy food that sat alongside eggs or was stuffed into a BLT. But times have changed, and the bacon trend has taken over everything from air fresheners to socks to Burger King sundaes.

Burger King’s bacon sundae has the Internet abuzz with poster sightings from a restaurant in Nashville, Tenn.  While the contents of the sundae could not be confirmed, it looks like a vanilla ice cream sundae topped with chocolate and caramel syrups and sprinkled with bacon.

GrubGrade showed posters at the same location for barbecue sandwiches, frozen lemonade and sweet potato fries.

If you’re a big fan of pork but too timid to try it in your dessert, other bacon options include bacon coffins, bacon soap or bacon lip balm.
