7-Eleven Celebrates Birthday With Free Slurpees

TIM SLOAN/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- It’s no coincidence that 7-Eleven is celebrating its birthday on none other than July 11.  From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m, you can grab a free 7.11 oz Slurpee from one of the participating locations.

Frozen soft drinks were discovered by accident in the 1950s when a soda fountain broke down, forcing Omar Knedlik to put the drinks in the freezer.  The slushy-like drinks were a hit with customers and Knedlik later invented the first frozen soda machine.

7-Eleven agency director Bob Stanford coined the term “Slurpee” in 1967.  The carbonated drinks were initially served behind the counter in stores where clerks would serve the drinks to customers.

Have Your Slurpee and Drink It, Too: Free Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven

Tim Sloan/AFP/Getty Images(DALLAS) -- Slurpee enthusiasts unite.

The nation’s largest convenience store chain, 7-Eleven is expected to give away five million -- roughly 1,000 per store -- 7.11-ounce Slurpees to celebrate the chain’s unofficial birthday: 7/11.

The birthday Slurpee giveaway proved a successful marketing tactic last year, when 7-Eleven handed out 4.5 million icy beverages in exchange for a 38 percent sales increase.

The campaign also leverages social media sites Twitter and Facebook to draw traffic to the stores and to the company’s website,, where fans can download hats and confetti to join the celebration.

Like other national chains, 7-Eleven has found freebies to be very lucrative.
