Burger King Celebrates 55th Anniversary of the Whopper

Scott Olson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Burger King is celebrating the 55th anniversary of one of its most popular items: the Whopper.  The restaurant chain has introduced a limited-time menu featuring two new whopper sandwiches and sweet potato curly fries.

“The Whopper Sandwich has been the iconic flagship of the Burger King menu since its introduction in 1957,” Burger King’s Flavia Faugeres, executive vice president and global chief marketing officer, said in a statement.

One of the new menu items, the Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper Sandwich, is made with bacon and Wisconsin cheddar.  The Angry Whopper Sandwich has bacon, Habanero cheese, jalapeno slices and spicy onion petals, and is topped with a special “angry” sauce.

Both sandwiches are priced at $4.49 for regular size or $2.19 for a Whopper Junior.  Burger King is selling the sweet potato curly fries for $1.89.

The new menu items will be served in retro-style Burger King packaging.

Bacon Sundae Among Burger King's New Summer Menu Items

Scott Olson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Burger King is out with its new menu items for the summer season and the one creating the most buzz is the restaurant's bacon sundae.

The dessert was tested earlier this year in Nashville, Tenn., where it was received well, and starting this week, it will be available at Burger King restaurants nationwide.

In a press release Wednesday, the company said the sundae "features the rich and creamy vanilla BK® soft serve, drizzled with chocolate fudge, caramel and topped with bacon crumbles, complete with a thick-cut, hardwood smoked bacon garnish."

Those daring to try the new treat should be prepared to take a hefty hit to their waistlines: the dessert is said to have 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.

Along with the bacon sundae, Burger King also unveiled other BBQ-inspired menu items, including several sandwiches, a frozen lemonade and sweet potato fries.  The items will be avaible for a limited time only.

McDonald's Likely to Increase Prices of Some Menu Items

Photo Courtesy - Tim Boyle/Getty Images(CHICAGO) -- The next time you buy a burger at McDonald's it may cost you more.

The Illinois-based fast food chain announced Monday that it may increase the price of some menu items to offset the rising cost of ingredients, according to the Chicago Tribune.  The average price the company pays for beef, chicken, cheese and other of its most-used ingredients is projected to rise anywhere from 2 to 2.5 percent this year.

"As commodity and other cost pressures become more pronounced as we move throughout the year, we will likely increase prices to offset some, but not necessarily all, of these cost increases," McDonald's Chief Financial Officer Pete Bensen said.

McDonald's said that the price hikes would not affect their entire menu, only select items, and that it would be considerate of its consumers and affordability, especially since the country is still working its way out of a recession.

Also on Monday, the company reported its fourth-quarter profit, which rose two percent to $1.24 billion.
