Pepsi Developing 100 Percent Plant-Based Plastic Bottles

PRNewsFoto/PepsiCo(PURCHASE, N.Y.) -- PepsiCo announced Tuesday that it has taken a big step towards significantly reducing its carbon footprint by developing the world's first plastic bottle made entirely from renewable, plant-based resources.

The eco-friendly bottle is 100 percent recyclable and is made from "bio-based raw materials, including switch grass, pine bark and corn husks." PepsiCo said it hopes to tap into more renewable sources in the future to make the bottle, including "orange peels, potato peels, oat hulls and other agricultural byproducts from its foods business."

According to the company, the bottle's molecular structure is identical to petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, bottles that are currently used to house beverages.

PepsiCo said it will pilot production of the new bottle in 2012, with full-scale commercialization to follow upon its successful completion.
