(NEW YORK) -- Although not yet confirmed, Apple Inc. is gearing up to mass produce a new iPhone for Verizon Wireless by the end of 2010. Sources told Wall Street Journal that customers of Verizon can expect to purchase the smartphone early next year.
The Verizon iPhone, similar in design to the AT&T iPhone, will be based on "an alternative wireless technology called CDMA." Qualcomm Inc., which also has not commented on a potential Verizon iPhone, is said to be producing a chip for the new phone.
Since the iPhone's debut in 2007, AT&T has had the exclusive rights to sell the popular smartphone. Wall Street Journal reports that Apple Inc. will also produce a fifth generation iPhone separate from the rumored Verizon iPhone. It is not clear if or when that model will be available to Verizon subscribers.
Verizon Wireless also declined to comment.
