Redbox Offering Free DVD Rental

Redbox(NEW YORK) -- Redbox is offering one free DVD rental from its entertainment kiosks on Thursday in celebration of reaching two billion movie and game rentals.

The company is offering free, one-night DVD rentals on March 8 with the promo code, THANKS2U, according to the Redbox Facebook page.  The code expires at 11:59:59 p.m. CT.

The company, based in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., said its two billionth disc was the movie, Drive featuring Ryan Gosling.  It was rented at a McDonald’s restaurant in Philomath, Ore. over the weekend.

Redbox said it has over 29,000 locations across the country with a presence in every state.

Coinstar Inc., which owns Redbox, said on Feb. 6 its earnings almost tripled after Redbox kiosks picked up customers who left Netflix after the latter announced its failed pricing policy.  The quarterly performance was much better than analysts expected.

Redbox to Offer Online Video Subscriptions by Year's End

Photo Courtesy - Redbox(OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.) - Redbox has announced they will offer online video streaming subscriptions by the end of the year, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The company, which currently operates more than 30,000 Redbox kiosks, will now be competing with Netflix in the online movie arena. Rumors have circulated that Redbox will pair with another company to offer the service, with both Amazon.com and Hulu.com being mentioned as potential partners, although neither has been confirmed.

The new service will offer consumers access to movies on mutiple devices, in addition to in-store kiosk pickups, for a monthly fee.

The move may help Redbox make up for lower-than-expected revenue last quarter, with more and more consumers turning to Internet-based entertainment.
