Netflix Raises Rental Plan Prices

PRNewsFoto/Netflix, Inc.(LOS GATOS, Calif.) -- Customers are unhappy now that Netflix, a popular Internet movie rental service, has decided to raise the price of its cheapest rental plan.

Netflix had previously offered a plan for $9.99 per month that included online streaming for an unlimited number of movies as well as the rental of one DVD via mail at a time.

Now the rental service has announced it will replace this plan with one that cost $15.98 per month, combining two previously existing plans -- streaming only for $7.99 per month and DVD-only rental for 7.99 per month, checking out only one movie at a time.

Netflix, which offers a much larger selection of titles in disc format, announced the change in price plans on its blog, inciting customer complaints on the site. The company has altered its prices before, but never so drastically.

Customers posted angry comments to the blog post Tuesday.  "I guess it's finally time to cancel my Netflix subscription.  DVDs + Streaming gave me a great bang for my buck, but by not offering any sort of bunking discount for those wanting both, I can't justify sending you my money every month," one subscriber wrote. Another said, "Sept. 1 I'll be canceling.  I do without cable … I think I can do without Netflix."

Netflix explained the change in its blog post Tuesday, saying, "Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs."
