Retailers Prepare for Super Saturday

Jupiterimages/Thinkstock(CHICAGO) -- Retailers are banking on last minute Christmas shoppers this weekend.  

Stores like Toys R Us and Macy’s are extending hours. Many retailers are also rolling out last minute deals.

Ryan Burrow from ABC News visited an olive oil specialty store in suburban Chicago and learned the retailer is overstaffing all weekend long and expecting some big crowds.

Some analysts predict this year’s Super Saturday sales could surpass Black Friday’s.

Scheduling Snafu Brings Super Saturday Shopping Early

Sean Gallup/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- This year shoppers will get not one, but two Super Saturday's to grab gifts for the holidays.

Super Saturday, a day of huge savings and deep discounts normally falls on the last Saturday before Christmas. But this year that day is Christmas Eve, leaving just hours for retailers to unload all that holiday merchandise. That's why several national chains including Macy's, Sears and JC Pennys celebrate Super Saturday on Dec. 17.

This scheduling snafu is a big deal for desperate retailers. While Thanksgiving weekend might have set sales records, the drop in the following two weeks of 2.4 percent was the biggest since 2000.

More than forty percent of Americans say they were done with their holiday shopping as of last week.

Retailers in Saturday Holiday Shopping Shift

GABRIEL BOUYS/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Attention holiday shoppers! Your favorite retailer may have shuffled the calendar.

Although last-minute gift buyers can usually count on a final round of discounts and promotions the last Saturday before Christmas, this year is different.

“Super Saturday,” as retailers call it, falls on December 24 – too late for some big stores already anxious about their holiday sales.

Sears, JCPenny, Macy’s, and some other stores decided to shift their final pre-Christmas push forward by a week. Many promotions begin this weekend, but not all stores are making the change, which could prove confusing to shoppers.

After all the hype surround Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Free Shipping Friday, and Green Monday, some retailers are fearful consumers may be shopped out – exhausted by the seemingly endless round of marketing promotions.

Predictions about this year’s holiday season are mixed.

The International Council of Shopping Centers reported a sharp drop off in sales during early December after the Thanksgiving holiday rush. But this week the National Retail Federation boosted its forecast to a 3.8 percent increase for the season, up from an October prediction of 2.8 percent.

Shoppers shouldn’t expect a glut of deeply-discounted unsold goods.

“Retailers have got incredibly smart about their yield management,” says Brian Hoyt of

“They did a lot of heavy discounting on the big ticket items right up front,” at the start of the holiday shopping season.

“Now you’re seeing the discount strategy shift to other kinds of last minute gift items that consumers purchase,” says Hoyt. Books, movies, music and fashion accessories are all on sale. “Items that sell for under $100.”
