Group Sends 21,000 Pizzas to US Military for Super Bowl

U.S. Military(NEW YORK) -- A non-profit group said that it sent 21,000 pizzas to members of the U.S. military for the Super Bowl, passing its goal of 20,000 pies.

Pizza 4 Patriots, a 501(c)3 registered non-profit based in Illinois, has been sending pizzas to military service members abroad for the last five years.

For Super Bowl 2013, the group’s goal was to send 20,000 pizzas to service members in the Middle East.

Mark Evans, the retired Air Force master sergeant who started the organization, says he is still calculating how much money was raised through online and mailed donations, plus donated food and materials.  For example, the pizzas required about 10,000 pounds of dry ice, at $1 a pound.

Private carrier DHL Express donated the shipping services.  Many of the pizzas were air-dropped to service members in the field.  The shipping company said it has worked with Pizza 4 Patriots to send more than 122,000 pizzas to U.S. military personnel overseas since 2008.

“We get pizzas to soldiers for under $10 when you can’t get a pizza to your house for that amount,” said Evans, who now works for AT&T.

Evans said he has already heard stories about service members who appreciated receiving pizzas for the Super Bowl on Sunday, though he hasn’t heard whether his 25-year old daughter, an Air Force pilot in Afghanistan, was able to enjoy the pizza.

“Hopefully she received some,” he said.  “It’s a very fluid situation in a combat zone.”

Many of the pizzas were delivered during the week leading up to the game.

Evans’ next goal is to collect enough money and supplies to deliver enough pizzas on July 4, Independence Day, to feed all the military service members in the Middle East.

Obama Cracks Down On For-Profit Schools That Prey On Veterans

JIM WATSON/AFP/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- In front of thousands of service members, President Obama on Friday signed an executive order aimed at protecting veterans from for-profit educational institutions trying to “swindle” and “hoodwink” them instead of providing the education they deserve.

Speaking to the Army’s Third Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., the president, with his wife at his side, described how some for-profit institutions target veterans, bombarding them with emails and phone calls, promising advanced degrees and future job placement.

“You’re dealing with folks who aren’t interested in helping you.  They’re not interested in helping you find the best program.  They are interested in getting the money.  They don’t care about you; they care about the cash,” he said. “That’s appalling.  That’s disgraceful.  It should never happen in America.”

The order, part of the president’s ongoing “We Can’t Wait” executive action campaign, is intended to crack down on these improper recruiting practices and to strengthen student protections for veterans.

“The executive order I’m about to sign will make life a whole lot more secure for you and your families and our veterans — and a whole lot tougher for those who try to prey on you,” the president said.

The order requires colleges that participate in the G.I. Bill program and the Department of Defense’s tuition program to provide veterans with the “Know Before You Owe” form, a document that outlines the financial aid available to student and how much debt they will likely take on.

The order also directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to trademark the term “G.I. Bill” to prevent educational institutions from fraudulently marketing their programs to beneficiaries of the program.

While members of Congress have introduced legislation to address these same issues, Friday’s action was intended to cast Obama as a take-charge president willing to circumvent gridlock on Capitol Hill.

US Chamber of Commerce Offering Job Help to Veterans

US Chamber of Commerce(NEW YORK) -- As thousands of troops prepare to come home soon from Afghanistan, those who choose to leave the military may have difficulty finding work.  The unemployment rate for veterans is already well above the national average.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce hopes to alleviate this by launching a nationwide campaign to find jobs for veterans.

"What we're doing is connecting employers with those veterans," Kevin Schmigel of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says.

The former Marine notes that most vets make great workers, saying, "90 percent of all military occupations are directly transferable to jobs in the private sector."

Schmigel and the lobbying group are organizing a series of major job fairs for veterans that will provide advice on how to get a job.  During the events, vets will get a chance to "talk about what their skill set in the military will mean to a company," he says.

"I think they also need to take some time to sit down with people and do interviews," Schmigel adds.

Troops Charged for Extra Bags; Delta Apologizes for Miscommunication

Delta Air Lines(BALTIMORE) -- The last thing you need after fighting in Afghanistan is to fight with an airline over baggage fees.

U.S. soldiers on a flight from Baltimore to Atlanta had to do just that with Delta Air Lines on Tuesday after the carrier charged them $2,800 in luggage fees.

While on board, some of the troops expressed their anger by recording a video, which was later posted online on YouTube.  The soldiers said they were told they could check in up to four bags on the flight without having to pay any fees.

Delta issued an apology after the incident but said it was all a big miscommunication.  Under the company's rules, active duty U.S. military personnel traveling on orders may check up to four bags in first class and three bags in coach for free.

The soldiers, however, did not meet this criteria since they were apparently traveling with four bags in coach.

The airline said it is "currently looking further into the situation, and will be reaching out to each of [the soldiers] personally to address their concerns and work to correct any issues they have faced."
