US Markets End the Week with Mixed Results

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Stocks remained mostly unchanged one day after the market's first opening day of the year slump since 2008.  It's been a quiet week on Wall Street, with many investors on vacation and a winter storm that kept others home.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 29 points at 16,469.99. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 11 points to 4,131.91. The S&P 500 was off just a fraction of a point at 1,831.37.

The outgoing Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke gave an upbeat forecast for the economy, saying that he sees stronger growth in 2014. Bernanke says Americans' finances have improved, and the outlook for home sales is brighter.  He also expects less drag from federal spending and tax increases. Bernanke is expected to step down at the end of the January.
