Charleston Woman Dead in Apparent Suicide in Wisconsin Jail

(MEQUON, Wis.) -- A Charleston woman in a Wisconsin jail was found dead over the weekend of an apparent suicide, the Post and Courier reports.

Bridgitt Moorehead, 41, had been arrested June 4 in Mequon, Wis., along with a 50-year-old Charleston man after an argument led to an alleged physical fight.

On Sunday, jailers found Morrehead unresponsive in her cell, having apparently hung herself with bedding.

Moorehead had not been on suicide watch when she died, and had reportedly spoken with a mental health counselor shortly upon being taken into custody, who had cleared her to be housed with the jail's general population.

Detectives from the Ozaukee County sheriff’s office are investigating the incident and will likely turn their findings over to an outside agency for review once they are done.

Deputy Who Shot U-Haul Driver Back on Duty

(CHARLESTON, S.C.) -- The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputy who shot a U-Haul truck driver on June 2 is back on duty, the Post and Courier reports.

Deputy Kim Poirer was placed on administrative leave after she shot Ricky Anthony Jennings, 52, after a brief pursuit and a struggle earlier in the month.

Jennings, who had recently been released from federal prison, was driving a U-Haul truck erratically on U.S. Highway 17 in McClellanville, according to police. Poirer trailed Jennings for four miles, and when he stopped the truck, he ran away, police say. Poirer chased after him and he fought back. Poirer eventually tased him. Jennings still wasn’t down, and Poirer fired at him when he reached into his pocket.

State Law Enforcement Division and solicitors in Georgetown County cleared Poirer of wrongdoing following an investigation.

Jennings, who is recovering from gunshot wounds to the back and arm, faces charges for reckless driving, failure to stop for blue lights, resisting arrest, and first-degree assault and battery.
