Prison Guard Rescued After Being Taken Hostage by Inmates

(BISHOPVILLE, S.C.) -- A prison guard was rescued on Thursday night after being taken hostage by inmates at the Lee Correctional Institute in Bishopville hours earlier.

The hostage situation reportedly began around 5 p.m. in the Chesterfield dormitory. The guard was attacked and held hostage in a broom closet, according to The State newspaper, which reported that the guard was eventually freed shortly before 10 p.m. after authorities moved in on the area where he was being held captive.

The guard, whose name was not released, sustained some cuts and was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, according to published reports.
