USPS Unveils Stamp Honoring a Local Athlete

(CAMDEN, S.C.) -- Camden native and baseball great, Larry Doby, was honored with his own U.S. postal stamp, reports The State.

In 1847, Doby became the first African-American in the American League and is the only member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame from South Carolina.

In a packed room at the Camden Archives Museum Thursday, elected officials and Doby’s family gathered in a ceremony by the U.S. Postal Service to unveil the new postage stamp.

Doby died at the age of 79 in 2003.
