Health Department Encourages New Moms to Breastfeed

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- State health officials are encouraging new and soon-to-be mothers across Tennessee to breastfeed their young ones.

This comes as the state observes World Breastfeeding Week, which is August 1 through 7. The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is using the occasion to remind new and expectant mothers about the importance of breastfeeding to both mothers and babies.

"We often think about the benefit to babies, but breastfeeding has distinct benefits for mothers as well," TDH director of Family Health and Wellness Michael Warren said in a statement. "Mothers who breastfeed are at reduced risk for cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, post-partum depression, breast and ovarian cancer and other debilitating conditions."
