State Reduces Penalties for Signal Mountain High School Teachers

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- The Tennessee State Board of Education has reduced the penalties for five Signal Mountain High School educators who allegedly violated school policy on alcohol use during a senior class cruise to the Bahamas in March, The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports.

The five are teacher Steven Redman, assistant principal Jason McKinney and guidance counselors Dr. Anne Cushing, Leslie Sharpe and Dr. Leann Welch. The group was suspended for ten days, and Welch and Cushing received additional suspensions after authorities learned they also violated alcohol policy on the school campus, the paper says.

Hamilton County school district officials met with state officials last week, and additonal information provided at the meeting led to a less severe penalty, according to the Times Free Press.
