Illinois Soldier Killed in IED Attack in Afghanistan

(WASHINGTON) -- An Illinois resident has been killed while serving in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said Sunday.

Sgt. Michael E. Ristau, 25, of Rockford, Ill., died on Friday in Qalat, Zabul province, Afghanistan, according to a release by the Department. Officials said Ristau died from injuries sustained when his vehicle came under attack by an enemy improvised explosive device.

Ristau was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
