Crews Clean Up Following Phenomenal Santa Ana Wind Storm

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) -- Crews were up all night across the Western United States, cleaning up after Thursday's violent windstorm.

High wind warnings were issued in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. By early Thursday, winds of over 90 mph were recorded in Utah, overturning semi-trailer rigs and leaving 30,000 homes and businesses without power, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

On Friday, hundreds of thousands of people remain without power in Southern California, while tens of thousands of customers in Utah remain in the dark.

In Nevada, visibility was obscured by dust kicked up from the desert.

The Santa Ana winds are a fall phenomenon on the West Coast -- triggered when dry winds blow west from the desert and squeeze through the mountains. This week's storms, however, are being characterized as an extremely rare phenomenon.
