Colorado Springs No. 2 in Nation for Best Places for Veterans to Live

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Co.) -- Colorado Springs ranked No. 2 in the country among the best places for military veterans and their families to live, according to a Livability.com survey.

Just in time for Veterans Day, the survey ranked the top 10 places in the nation for veterans to retire or launch a second career. The results were based on quality of life attributes that veterans find appealing, such as low cost of living, unemployment rate and outdoor activities.

“We know it’s important for veterans and their families to have access to quality medical care and social services,” John Hood, Livability.com spokesman, said in a statement, “so we chose cities with excellent health-care systems and VA hospitals. The cities on this list also tend to be more diverse, have excellent school systems and higher education options and greater opportunities for post-military employment.”

Colorado Springs boats five military installations.

Fayetteville, N.C., ranked No. 1.

Police Take 10 Juveniles into Custody over Carjacking

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) -- Police detained 10 juveniles Monday in connection with last week's carjacking outside a 7-Eleven on the city's east side.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports a 1998 Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle was stolen at gunpoint last week from a Sand Creek High School student after he was approached by two suspects asking for cigarettes and money. When the victim said he had neither, the suspects flashed a gun, took his keys and fled the scene.

Authorities say they spotted the SUV outside the school on Monday, and were led on an 80-mph chase before they were able to successfully pull the vehicle over. When they pulled the SUV over, police say, there were 10 juveniles crammed into the vehicle.

Police say they are trying to determine which, if any, of the individuals taken into custody were responsible for the carjacking. No arrests have been made.

The suspect reportedly then surrendered without incident, and was taken into custody.

A police report says that the outstanding warrant was for burglary involving weapons.

Grocery Stores Could Face Lawsuits in Listeria Outbreak

(DENVER) -- The organizations linked to the recent outbreak of listeria could widen the lawsuits to distributing parties, according to The Denver Post.

The listeria outbreak has claimed the lives of 29 people and sickened well over a hundred people. Since Jensen Farms, the Colorado cantaloupe producer at the center of the scandal, does not have enough money in liability coverage for the expected multi-million dollar lawsuits, victims could slap grocery stores and other distributors with lawsuits.

Eight people died from listeria in Colorado, and five in New Mexico. It is being called the deadliest food-related outbreak since 1985.
