Police Catch Two Men ‘Car Hopping’

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) -- Colorado Springs Police caught two men, one juvenile and one 18-year-old, stealing items from unlocked cars, a practice called “car hopping.”

The two men were spotted by Officer Mike Hughes while on routine patrol at 4:18 a.m. Hughes questioned the two suspicious men, one of whom had a backpack. They said they were just walking around.

Hughes let them go, but soon afterwards found two vehicles that had apparently had been broken into with items stolen. Hughes, with the help of other on-duty officers, relocated and detained the two, who eventually admitted to “car hopping.”

The juvenile was served and released to a parent, while the 18-year-old, Gabriel D. Land, was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
