University of Colorado Bear Killed by Car

(BOULDER, Colo.) -- The bear that was tranquilized on the University of Colorado campus last week and whose photograph became an Internet sensation was hit by a car and killed Thursday morning, The Gazette reports.

The 280-pound black bear was hit by a car around 5:40 a.m. in the Denver-bound lanes of U.S. 36. The bear was photographed by university students Andy Duann and became famous when the image went viral on the Internet.

Officials recovered the bear Thursday morning about half a mile from the Cherryvale bridge southeast of Boulder, the paper says.
