USC, State Museum Get Historical Astronomy Collection

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) -- The University of South Carolina and the State Museum have acquired a collection of historic telescopes and astronomy books as a donation from Columbia native Robert B. Ariail.

According to the university, Ariail has donated a collection of more than 5,200 rare books and star atlases, scientific journals, rare offprints and manuscripts, historic and modern telescopes, along with binoculars, lenses and other scientific equipment related to the study of the universe and dating back almost 500 years.

The telescopes and scientific equipment will reportedly be housed at the State Museum, while the books and other documents will be housed at the university's Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library.

The collection will be titled the Robert B. Ariail Collection of Historical Astronomy.

South Carolina Institutions Rank on 'U.S. News & World Report' List

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) -- South Carolina institutions ranked once again on U.S. News & World Report's annual list of the nation's best colleges and universities.

Wofford College was 64th on the list of liberal arts colleges. Converse College was 17th on the list of regional universities in the southern U.S.

Clemson University was 68th on the list of best universities. The University of South Carolina came in 111th.

Romney Tours South Carolina, Criticizes NLRB

(NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.) -- Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Monday criticized the National Labor Relations Board's suit against Boeing while campaigning in South Carolina.

Romney toured Boeing's manufacturing plant, which the NLRB says the company built to punish union workers in Washington state. The NLRB's dispute with Boeing has become a political issue between Republicans and Democrats beyond the two states.

On Tuesday, House Republicans announced that they were proposing a bill which would prevent the NLRB from interfering in the operations of a company that does not adhere to labor laws.

SC Man Accused of Using Stun Gun on Three People at NFL Game

(EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.) -- A South Carolina man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly used a stun gun on three men during an NFL game between the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys in New Jersey on Sunday night.

Authorities say 59-year-old Leroy T. McKelvey of Moncks Corner, S.C., used the device to shock the three men during a brawl at halftime. The altercation reportedly erupted after one of the victims, a Marine, became annoyed at McKelvey and his friends for not removing their hats or standing during the national anthem, according to the New York Daily News.

The three victims reportedly suffered minor injuries.

McKelvey faces a number of charges including aggravated assault and possession of a stun gun.

Pawlenty Joins Romney in Boeing Plant Tour

(NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.) -- After being endorsed by former presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney appeared with the former Minnesota governor in North Charleston on Monday.

Romney and Pawlenty toured Boeing's new plant in North Charleston. Romney then spoke out against the National Labor Relations Board's lawsuit against the manufacturing giant.

Romney is expected to attend the CNN Tea Party debate in Florida Monday afternoon.
