Governor Haley Visits BMW Headquarters

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) -- South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has done her part to keep a tradition alive, by visiting the BMW headquarters in Germany recently.

Governor Haley along with Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt visited the auto giant’s headquarters in Munich, where they met with a number of top company officials. BMW began manufacturing automobiles in Spartanburg, S.C. in 1994, with that plant now being the sole global producer of BMW’s X3, X5, and X6 vehicles.

According to a release from the governor’s office, every sitting South Carolina Governor since Carroll Campbell has met with the sitting CEO and Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW.

Morphene Mom Arrested for Killing Baby with Breast Milk

(SPARTANBURG, S.C.) -- A South Carolina woman was arrested after it was determined her six-week-old baby died from ingesting morphine in the mother's breast milk.

Stephanie Greene, 37, was charged with homicide by child abuse and several drug abuse charges.

In November, paramedics found baby Alexis dead at Greene’s home.  After seven months of investigations in which the coroner concluded that Alexis died from a lethal dose of ingested morphine, officials arrested Greene on Friday. Officials say Greene used fake prescriptions to buy drugs that she took while she was breastfeeding.

Greene is being held in a county detention facility without bond.

Civil War Submarine Turned Upright for First Time Since 1864

(CHARLESTON, S.C.) -- A Civil War submarine that sank in 1864 is standing upright for the first time in 147 years.

The Hunley is remembered as the first effective submarine in history. She sank three times over her short career, killing 21 Confederate crew members. The submarine sank the USS Housatonic shortly before mysteriously sinking -- for good -- herself.

In 2000, the innovative ship was exhumed from her watery grave in Charleston Harbor.

The seven-ton, 40-foot long submarine had been at a 45-degree angle since 1864. The risky rotation process, which took three days, is a major, painstaking, step in the restoration effort.

The reminder comes as the state observes National Mosquito Control Awareness Week from June 26 through July 2.

Tips residents can take to make their homes safer from mosquitoes include:
- Not allowing water to stagnate in low-lying areas of the yard, in boats, or on tarps that cover yard items such as boats, swimming pools, grills, and woodpiles
- Removing buckets, cups, bottles, flowerpots, plastic bags, tires or any water-holding containers that might have accumulated outside.
- Keeping birdbaths and pet bowls clean.
