SCE&G to Close Several Coal Plants

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) -- Officials at the South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. announced Wednesday that it will shut down some of its coal-fired plants by the end of 2018 in an effort to be more environmentally conscious.

The State reports that the Cayce-based utility will shut down the plant adjoining the Lake Murray dam and four other similar units over the next few years.

The closure of the plans will help SCE&G meet ”increasingly stringent" environmental standards, utility chairman Kevin Marsh said.
