Rangers to Honor Fan Who Died with Full-Size Statue

(ARLINGTON, Texas) -- The Texas Rangers have announced they will honor Shannon Stone, the fan who fell to his death July 7 while attempting to catch a ball in the outfield, with a statue at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Stone, a 39-year-old firefighter from Brownwood, Texas, died after falling over the rail in left-center field in an attempt to catch a ball for his six-year-old son, who was in attendance with him.

"We feel that this statue will be a most fitting tribute," said Rangers CEO and president Nolan Ryan in a statement released Monday. "It will not only serve to honor Mr. Stone's memory but also to recognize Rangers fans and baseball fans everywhere."

The statue, tentatively named "Rangers Fans," will be a full-size bronze statue depicting Stone and his son, Cooper. Ryan says the organization expects it to be completed in time for the 2012 season.
