Kwame Kilpatrick Released from Prison, Heads to Dallas
(JACKSON, Mich.) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was released from prison early Tuesday morning, after serving 14 months behind bars.
Kilpatrick was released from the Jackson State Prison around 6:15 a.m., and whisked off in a black Cadillac Escalade.
The former mayor was sentenced to prison after he violated his probation by failing to disclose his assets to the court. He still owes the City of Detroit over $800,000 in restitution money.
Upon release, Kilpatrick did not speak to reporters, but in a statement issued prior to his release, he thanked all who supported him through "this tumultuous time," and said that during his stay in prison he learned "how important it is for me to put God, Faith, and Family first."
"I am beginning anew," the statement went on to say. "I am looking forward. I have new dreams and aspirations."
Kilpatrick is required to return to Texas within 24 hours of his release, where he'll have to report to a parole officer in that state, according to ABC's Detroit affiliate WXYZ-TV. He will reportedly travel to Dallas where he will be reunited with his family.
