Highland Park Plans Ground-Spraying for Mosquitoes

(HIGHLAND PARK, Texas) -- The Highland Park Department of Public Safety will begin spraying for mosquitoes late Friday night after one of its mosquito traps tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Highland Park set four traps -- separate from the county's traps -- after last year featured an outbreak of West Nile that killed 19 people.

The start of West Nile season was declared earlier this month.

According to the Morning News, the county had previously begun setting traps in May, but last year's outbreak prompted year-round surveillance.

HazMat Incident at Federal Office Building a False Alarm

(DALLAS) -- Dallas Fire-Rescue’s HazMat Team was called to deal with a “white powdery substance” found in the federal office building, but testing revealed it to be a harmless hygiene product.

Authorities were alerted to the situation shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday. A white powder had been found on the seventh floor of the federal office building, located at 1114 Commerce Street, in Downtown Dallas.

HazMat cleared the scene without incident. According to Jason L. Evans, Public Information Officer for Dallas Fire-Rescue Department, the powder, though it apparently looked similar to dangerous substances, was ultimately harmless.

“It was not in a container and turned out to be some sort of feminine product,” Evans said in a release.

All tests came back negative.

Fort Worth Police Step Up Security for Main Street Arts Festival

(FORT WORTH) -- Police in Fort Worth are stepping up security for this week's Main Street Arts Festival, the Star-Telegram reports.

The increase in security comes on the heels of Monday's Boston Marathon bombings.

Figures were not immediately available on how many police normally staff the downtown event, or how many will be added. Police said the city works with the FBI and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to assess intelligence issues each year, and police have consulted with the FBI special agent in charge after the Boston attack, the paper says.

The decision to increase security was made by police on Monday, according to the Star-Telegram.
