(MESQUITE, Texas) -- On Wednesday, animal control officers seized dozens of cats from a Mesquite home that was an illegal animal rescue group, reports ABC affiliate WFAA-TV.
Neighbors complained of a stench from a two-bedroom home on Rusk Drive. 86 cats were discovered in Keli Halteman’s home. Many of the animals were sick and the house had no air conditioning.
Halteman ran an unauthorized rescue shelter known as Haleman’s Haven and faces violations for not having an active commercial kennel permit.
The cats were placed with Mesquite Animal Services and are looking for new homes.
