Arrival of Southwest Airlines in Des Moines Prompts Fare Changes

(DES MOINES, Iowa) -- Southwest Airlines has not yet flown into service in Des Moines, but already competing airlines are feeling the change.

The Des Moines Register reports that airlines have begun lowering prices for some flights in preparation for Southwest flights that begin service in Des Moines on Sept. 30. Southwest will begin offering flights to Chicago’s Midway Airport.

Competing airlines have begun offering flights to Denver, where Southwest flies, for as low as $177, and rates to Chicago are also slated to decrease, according to Des Moines airport executive director Don Smithey.
