Two Men Charged with Arson in Madrid Fires

(MADRID, Iowa) -- Two men have been charged with arson in a series of fires near Madrid, the Des Moines Register reports.

Meldaris Mehmedovic, 19, of Clive and Anthony Salazar, 20, of Des Moines, were both arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with two counts of second-degree arson, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Officials said the June 20 and 21 fires destroyed a corncrib, an abandoned house and a barn. Salazar had also been wanted on suspicion of assault and willful injury in a Johnson County case from 2011, the paper says.

Both men were held Wednesday at the Polk County Jail on $20,000 bonds.
