Oakland Univ. President Announces Retirement on Day Wife Axed

(ROCHESTER, Mich.) -- President of Oakland University, Gary Russi, announced Wednesday that he's retiring. His announcement came the same day that his wife was axed as head coach of the university's women's basketball team.

The school's athletics director, Tracy Huth, announced Wednesday that Beckie Francis has been relieved of her position as coach of the basketball team, effective immediately.

Russi's retirement will take effect on August 1. The university says Associate Vice President for Outreach Dr. Betty Youngblood will be named interim president.

It's not clear if Russi's decision to retire was related to his wife's removal.
